William "Bill" Claud Duren

William C. "Bill" Duren of Fort Mill, SC and formerly of Charlotte, NC, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Bill was born in East Point, GA in 1942. He graduated from Russell High School where he was voted "Most Athletic". Bill attended Presbyterian College on a football scholarship and completed his degree in Engineering at Georgia Southern. Following college, Bill began a 35-year career with Duke Energy (formerly Duke Power). At retirement, he was General Manager of Corporate Properties.
Bill was the consummate gentleman: considerate and kind to all and a devoted husband father, son, brother, grandfather and uncle. A dedicated athlete, Bill enjoyed running and completed several marathons including the USMC Marathon. He also enjoyed biking and participated in many races including the area's beach run. He was a long-term member of the Harris and Ballantyne Village YMCAs. Bill was extremely handy and loved the challenge of fixing things. He read constantly, both fiction and non-fiction, and was a huge fan of both NPR and PBS.
He is survived by his wife, Deneen S. Duren; his mother, Mildred Duren Pierce of Statesboro, GA; his son Matthew (wife Becky and grandchildren Cody, Kayla, Ellie, Megan, Zack) of Valrico, FL; his son Michael (wife Renee and son Luke) of Dawsonville, GA; his brother Kenneth Duren (wife Christy) of Roswell, GA; his brother-in-law Otis Stephens; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was pre-deceased by his father John Duren, his sister Linda Stephens, and his first wife Mary Lou Chandler Duren. A loving pet owner, he adored his poodle, Holly.
A memorial service will be held on August 8, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Park Pointe Village Community Room, 3025 Chesbrough Boulevard, Rock Hill, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Community Care of Rock Hill, SC; NPR (through WFAE); or PBS (through ETV Endowment of SC).
