Obituary

Ruth Novella Stokes, 91, of York, SC passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, surrounded by the love and memories of the family she cherished throughout her life. Born on October 31, 1934, in McAdenville, NC. Ruth lived a long and colorful life defined by resilience, humor, determination, and a personality that could never be forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Johnny Moore Stokes; her parents, Lester and Lucy Carpenter; and her sons, Wayne Sisk, Steve Sisk, and Danny Sisk.

Left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses: Ricky and Patty Sisk, Gene and Cindy Sisk, Lester Sisk and Debra Ann, Sandra and James Johnson, and Mary Childers and daughter-in-law, Amanda Sisk, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and lifelong friends whose lives were forever touched by her love and unmistakable spirit.

Ruth was a true spitfire in every sense of the word. She was strong-willed, independent, outspoken, funny, and absolutely full of life. She had a sharp wit, a stubborn streak, and a sense of humor that could light up a room or keep everyone on their toes. Ruth never met a stranger, never held back her opinion, and never failed to make an impression on those around her. If Ruth walked into a room, you knew it. Her energy, sass, and larger-than-life personality made her unforgettable. She loved deeply, protected fiercely, and lived life entirely on her own terms. Beneath her fiery spirit was a woman with a big heart who cared deeply for her family and those closest to her.

Ruth also had a deep love for beautiful things that reflected her vibrant personality. She adored the colors purple and pink, loved butterflies, and found joy in flowers of every kind. Whether it was a blooming garden, a bouquet on the table, or colorful flowers surrounding her home, those simple beauties brought her happiness and perfectly matched the bright, spirited way she lived her life — bold, graceful, and impossible to ignore.

Through every joy and hardship life brought her way, Ruth remained strong. She carried herself with determination and grit, teaching those around her the importance of resilience, honesty, and finding humor even during difficult times. The stories, laughter, and memories she leaves behind will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved her.

Though her family mourns her passing, they also celebrate a life that was truly one of a kind. Ruth leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, laughter, and unforgettable moments that will be cherished for generations to come. Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life and memory of Ruth on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Bible Fellowship Holiness Church, 2350 Lawrence Road, Clover, South Carolina . The service will be led by Pastor Robert Beavers as loved ones come together to honor her life, share memories, and celebrate the love and kindness she brought to those around her.
