Nicholas Sinclair Childs, 39, passed away unexpectedly Friday, January 16, 2026, and found peace after a life marked by both deep love and deep struggle. Nick was loved by many and now leaves a large void in our lives.
Nick could talk about any topic with anybody. He relished going to concerts, catching a ballgame, playing trivia, checking out a new restaurant down the road, and soaking up all the sights and sounds a city has to offer. He did all these things with a diverse and colorful array of friends, many of whom were drawn into Nick’s orbit by his charming personality, quick wit, and welcoming attitude. Great stories, political discussions, movie quotes, and hearty laughter often filled the air when spending time with Nick.
Nick could be counted on to be there for his friends when they needed someone to talk to. He listened intently and offered support from the heart. He used his natural, warm presence and maybe a touch of sarcasm to lift his friends’ spirits when they needed it most.
Nick was admired by his nieces and nephews, and loved being the fun-uncle who lifted them up and flipped them around. He never tired of their boundless energy and loved them unconditionally.
A long-time Padres and Arsenal fan, Nick loved his time living in San Diego and Washington, D.C., and visiting other cities like Chicago and New York.
Neither money nor status mattered much to Nick. To him, it meant more to be yourself, share a laugh with the person sitting next to you, and to move through life with authenticity.
Nick had the best laugh and a smile that brightened up his whole face. He was the kindest person we knew and will be missed beyond words. His last act of ultimate kindness was being an organ and tissue donor through Sharing Hope SC.
Nick is survived by his parents Greg and Kathleen Childs, Rock Hill, S.C.; sisters, Michelle (Simon) van Steÿn, Arlington, Va., and Jennifer (Lance) Robeson, Florida; nieces and nephews, Sofia, Xavier, Cameron, Finley; extended family; and many friends who became his family.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In honor of Nick, please make a donation to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
