Obituary

Marney Lou Catherine Gorski Sims, 90, of Charlotte, died peacefully on Monday, Aug. 10, after a brief illness.

Marney, who went by Mimi, grew up in Door County, Wis., the daughter of Arthur Gorski, a World War II veteran, and the former Evelyn Christenson. She enjoyed telling the story of meeting her first husband, Lou, while teaching him dance lessons at an Arthur Murray studio. She broke the rule about not dating a customer and they married shortly thereafter. Lou’s jobs as a medical salesman and manager took them to Nebraska, California, New Jersey, Florida, Singapore, and North Carolina, and Marney expertly managed the moves and homes while raising their two children. She was a talented home decorator and cook and loved creating beautiful outdoor spaces as well. After Lou died, Mimi remarried to Emory Sims, and they lived in Greensboro and Hattiesburg, Miss., before returning to Charlotte, N.C. They traveled the world after Emory's retirement, visiting every continent except Antarctica. She took pride in managing her home and yard independently for many years after Emory’s death in 2012. She especially treasured her pets, most recently her beloved dog, Mitzi.Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands, Emory Sims and Louis Shaver, the father of her children; a sister, Marlene Alfano, and a brother, Roger Gorski. She is survived by her children, Wendy Baum (Bruce), of Orlando, Fla., and Mark Schaver (Fran Ellers), of Louisville, Ky; grandchildren Colin Jones, Lea Jones, Melanie Jones, Zoe Schaver, and Jack Schaver; three sisters, Sue Vasquez, Cathy Houtsinger, and Karin Christensen, all of Kenosha, Wis., and one brother, Ed Sandberg, of Kenosha; and two great-grandchildren.
