Johnnie Benson Gardner Jr

Johnnie "John Boy" Benson Gardner Jr., a beloved member of the Rock Hill, SC community, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 10th, 2026, at the age of 59. Born and raised in Rock Hill, Johnnie's life was a testament to his deep dedication to his family, his community, and his craft as a skilled boat mechanic.

Johnnie entered this world on Tuesday, February 8th, 1966, and from an early age, he showcased an innate talent for all things mechanical, earning a reputation as the best boat mechanic across York, Lancaster, Chester, and the surrounding areas. His passion for working on boats, golf carts, and anything with an engine not only defined his career but also brought him immense joy and satisfaction. Johnnie's commitment to his work was admired by many and will be remembered by every engine he brought back to life.

He is survived by his loving mother, Margie Faile Matheny, and his caring stepfather, Darrell. Johnnie's legacy continues through his sisters, Darlene Price, Lisa Boykin, and her husband Brett, Angel Dean and her husband Josh; and his brothers, Ricky Talley and his wife Donna, Darrell Matheny Jr., Eric Matheny, Michael Faile, and JR Faile. His memory will also be cherished by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Johnnie is preceded in death by his father, J.B. Gardner Sr., his stepdad Dewey Faile, his sisters Michelle Falcon and her husband Al Falcon, and Kathy Comer, as well as his brothers David and Ricky Faile. His grandparents, Evelyn and L.J. Talley, and Almetta Gardner, along with his special niece, Alexandra Falcon, and nephew, Austin Phillips, have also gone before him.

Family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by Johnnie are invited to a visitation on Thursday, January 15, 2026, from 2-6 PM at 1239 Knox Pointe Lane, Rock Hill, SC 29732. A graveside service will be held at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens on Friday, January 16, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, where we will gather to celebrate his life and the countless ways he enriched ours.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home & Cremation Center, and those wishing to honor Johnnie's memory may attend these services as we say our final goodbyes to a remarkable individual whose spirit and contributions will never be forgotten.

Johnnie lived a life filled with love, laughter, and loyalty. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion to his family and friends, and a passion for his work that inspired so many. May his soul rest in peace, and may his memory keep our hearts warm.
