Gilbert R. Fornatora, beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and entrepreneur, passed away peacefully at home in South Carolina on July 16, 2026, at the age of 97, with his devoted wife of 60 years, Nancy, by his side.

For more than six decades, Gilbert and Nancy built a life together grounded in love, resilience, and unwavering commitment to one another. Through every season of life—from building a family to growing a business and eventually enjoying retirement—they remained true partners. Nancy’s steadfast love, compassion, and devotion were the foundation of their family and a source of strength for Gilbert throughout his life, especially during his final years.Family was always Gilbert’s greatest source of pride. He was the loving father of his son, Darryl Fornatora, who preceded him in death, and his daughter, Christina Hendrex, and her husband, Daniel Hendrex. He treasured every moment spent with them and his grandchildren, Sydney and Alex, whose accomplishments and lives brought him immeasurable joy and pride.

Born on October 13, 1928, in New York City, Gilbert attended the New York Military Academy before earning a degree in Management Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War era and was awarded the Korean Service Medal along with other military commendations.

Following his military service, Gilbert founded a consulting engineering firm in New York City before pursuing an opportunity in Montreal, Canada, where he established Mighty Star Ltd. What began as a manufacturer of children’s accessories grew into a successful international toy company with manufacturing facilities in New Jersey and South Korea and offices in Hong Kong. At its height, Mighty Star employed more than 400 people, reflecting Gilbert’s vision, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Gilbert is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, including Cathy and Roberto Cabanazon, Jeff and Trisha Seltzer, Terry and Ted Monaghan, Danny and Lenore Collis, Michael Collis, Kevin and Katrina Collis, Cynthia and Steve Grivas, Sandra and Lyann Hamilton, along with numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held in September, with details and invitations to follow.

Gilbert will be remembered not only for the successful business he built, but for the life he built with Nancy and the family they cherished together. His legacy is one of integrity, perseverance, generosity, and unconditional love. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and lovingly carried in the hearts of all who knew him.
