Gary Neil Otwell

On Sunday April 20, 2014, Gary N. Otwell, age 72, went to that great golf course in the sky, where he is probably still searching for lost balls in the woods. Born August 6, 1941 to Joseph and Eleanor Otwell in Easton Maryland, Gary grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in Chemical Engineering, and went on to be a successful salesman in the metals and minerals industries. Gary and his family spent 20 years in Connecticut, living in Ridgefield and Newtown, before moving to the Carolinas, first to Matthews, NC in 1996 and finally to Fort Mill SC in 2006. Gary is survived by Janet Otwell of Fort Mill SC, his son Christopher Otwell of Fort Mill SC, his daughter Tracy Otwell of Chicago Il, and his grandchildren; Alex, Jacob, Tyler, and Isabella. Gary always enjoyed a good laugh, and while he could never remember where he left his cell phone, he could quote any and every Mel Brooks movie. As he always said, "It's good to be the King". He enjoyed swimming and skiing in his youth and playing golf, even if the game got the better of him most of the time, and spending time on the lake on his boat. And most of all, he enjoyed being the best grandfather he could be. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he would often share stories with his friends and family about all of them. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 11:00 am at Palmetto Funeral Home in Fort Mill SC with Philadelphia United Methodist Church Senior Pastor Kevin Cooley. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to York County Humane Society, 8177 Regent Parkway, Fort Mill, SC 29715.
