Obituary

Donnie Lee Helms Sr., affectionately known to many as “Hey Buddy,” passed away on October 31, 2026. A hardworking man with a generous heart, Donnie took pride in his work, cherished his family, and found joy in the simple things that made life meaningful.

An avid deer hunter, Donnie also enjoyed woodworking, following sports, and spending time cheering on his grandchildren at their games. He was known for sharing the things he made with his own hands, including handmade pens and keychains, as well as his homemade pimento cheese, which he happily shared with family and friends. Whether through his craftsmanship, his favorite hobbies, or his time with loved ones, Donnie had a way of making meaningful connections with those around him.

Donnie dedicated many years to his career, formerly working for Charlotte Block before retiring from Westinghouse, now Siemens, after 30 years of service. During his time there, he developed many lasting friendships that he treasured. Retirement did not slow him down, as he went on to spend nearly seven years working at the York County Convenience Centers, a job he truly loved.

Beyond his work and hobbies, Donnie gave his time to his community. He was a former Webelos Troop Leader and a former member of Riverview Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Session and as a Youth Leader. Through these roles, he shared his time and experience with others and made a lasting impact on those he served.

Donnie was preceded in death by his parents, Henry “Slim” Helms and Minnie Helms; his daughter, Robyn Leigh Helms Walbridge; his granddaughter, Cassie Buckaloo Liewald; and his brother, Oren Helms.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Rachel Currence Helms; his son, Donnie Lee Helms Jr.; his stepsons, Jason Flowe and Craig Flowe (Kelly); and his brothers, Charles Helms (Cathy) and Roger Helms (Sandy). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brendan Walbridge (Destinee), Sean Walbridge (Taylor), Rebecca Roseboom (David), Dalton Kyle Helms, Brighton Flowe, Baylor Flowe, Taylor Flowe, Hayden Flowe, and Maddox Flowe; and his great-grandchildren, David Roseboom, Lachlan Walbridge, and Lilee Walbridge. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Donnie will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of family, his generous spirit, and the many friendships he built throughout his life. His familiar “Hey Buddy,” handmade gifts, shared recipes, and enthusiastic support from the sidelines will remain cherished memories for those who knew and loved him.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 4,2026 1-3pm at Palmetto Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at Philadelphia United Methodist Church.
