Donna Flanders, age 67, passed away on July 22, 2025 at her home in Indian Land, SC. She was a true warrior with an incredible attitude and tenacity, but finally lost her 7 year battle with cancer.
She spent most of her early years in Gastonia and Belmont, NC. In 1990 she married her husband Bill Flanders, and they moved to and lived in Fort Mill and Indian Land, SC for 35 years. She left an 11 year career at Celgard in 1999 to be a stay home mother and focus on the love for her family and quality time for raising her son, Michael. She returned to work in 2006 as a near full time substitute teacher at the Indian Land elementary, middle, and high schools until 2018 when her cancer returned. She loved her students and they loved her, many referring to her as "Momma Flanders". She was a beautiful person with an infectious smile. She loved gardening and creating unique and unusual landscapes, creating arts and crafts, and most of all, making giant sand sculptures and searching for sea shells at her beach condo.
Donna is survived in death and painfully missed by her husband of 35 years, Bill Flanders, her son Michael Flanders, her mother Lola Wiggings, her mother & father-in-law Art & Lois Flanders, all from Indian Land, SC, and her brother Don Wiggins Jr. & sister-in-law Lynn Wiggins from Dallas, NC, as well as many family and friends. She was preceeded in death by her father, Don Wiggins Sr. in 2014.
Donna fought like a warrior for 7 with 2 different stage 4 cancers. I have never known anyone to fight like she did with the most incredible attitude and infectious smile, often in the middle of missery. She continued to get the most happiness and enjoyment life could give her through her battle. In the fall of 2024, when she ran out of treatment options, Donna and Bill took a 9,000 mile drive around the country to take in everything she could get. Her sense of humor never ended, referring to it as her farewell tour. That's just who she was. She was an inspiration and my real life hero. The final pages of her life story were torn away too soon.
Donna was cremated after death. There will be a memorial for her life at her home at 4347 Perth Rd, Indian Land, SC 29707, on Sunday, September 14, 2025, from 1:00pm-3:00pm. This will be an informal attire and drop-in as she wanted. Family and friends are welcome.
