It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected, but peaceful, passing of Debra Fields Howell on May 29, 2026, at her home in Rock Hill, SC. Debra went to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, at the age of 70. She was a beloved mother and wife, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and compassion, and unwavering love.
Born on February 28, 1956, in Rock Hill, SC, she possessed a strong Christian background, strong Christian beliefs, and attended, volunteered, and supported several churches in the Rock Hill area her entire life. She will always be remembered for her outgoing personality, generosity, friendliness, and love of life. No one she met was a stranger for long.
She is survived by her husband, James Howell of Rock Hill. She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph “Jake” Fields; her mother, Margaret Weaver Fields; her son, Mathew Fields Brooks; and her sister Denise Mills.
Deb spent seven years in hospitals, such as Duke and John Hopkins, for the treatment of her son. After her son passed, she began a career in nursing. As a Registered Nurse for 25 years, she lovingly cared for patients, mostly at the Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill. She worked in the endoscopy department at Piedmont for 8 of those years.
Deb loved crafting, especially making flower arrangements and decorating, shopping, sports cars, the SC shag dance, the beach, and travel. Debra Howell will be profoundly missed, but her memory will forever be a guiding light for those she touched. May she rest in peace, knowing that she was deeply loved.
A Visitation will be held at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home at 700 Heckle Boulevard, Rock Hill, SC, on Saturday, June 6th, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 with a Chapel Service immediately following. Interment will be at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Rock Hill.
Memorial donations may be made to the Rock Hill Shag Club,
PO Box 3122, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
