Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Catherine Sheils Bestall on May 30, 2026, at her home, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family. Born on July 21, 1950, in Queens, NY, Cathy was a beacon of kindness and positivity, a beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend whose light touched all who knew her.

Cathy was the cherished daughter of the late James and Margaret Sheils. She was a beloved sister to Molly Sheils, Ann Koepper, twin sister Betty Arnold, Ellen Duggins, Clare Sheils, Bill Sheils, Paul Sheils, and Trish O’Donnell. Her family was her greatest joy, and she took immense pride in her role as wife to Brian Bestall, with whom she shared 53 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, raising two wonderful children, Christopher (married to Amy) and Patricia (married to Josh), who were the pride of her life. Cathy was also the adored grandmother of five, who will forever carry her spirit in their hearts.

Professionally, Cathy served as a claims adjuster at State Farm Insurance, where she worked with compassion and grace for 25 years before her retirement. Her colleagues remember her as a dedicated and empathetic professional who always approached her work with integrity and care.

Cathy was deeply rooted in her community and faith, actively participating as a member of St. Philip Neri for many years. Her commitment to service extended beyond the church walls, as she volunteered at local food banks and arts programs, touching countless lives with her generosity and warmth.

An athlete at heart, Cathy embraced life with vigor, finding joy in activities such as swimming, tennis, and later, pickleball. Her love for the outdoors was shared with Brian as they spent countless hours boating on the waters of Lake Wylie. Cathy was also an avid reader and an enthusiastic traveler, always eager to explore new places and cultures.

Friends and family will be invited to celebrate Cathy’s life once memorial details are finalized.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Myositis Association, a cause close to Cathy’s heart. Contributions can be made in her memory at Myositis.

Cathy’s enduring legacy is one of love, kindness, and a welcoming spirit that embraced all who crossed her path. Her warmth and positivity will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
